action
With the help of his lover Clara, the gangster Duke Martin plans to rob an illegal betting shop run by Clara from his boss. The fictitious robbery does not go according to plan: Martin's accomplice Kowalski is shot and a police officer is killed by Martin. After the escape, Martin drops the seriously injured Kowalski and the stolen getaway car in front of a doctor's office and instructs him to tell the police that the car owner, Steve Ryan, is the murderer. After both the dying Kowalski and Clara have identified the completely innocent Ryan as the perpetrator, the latter is arrested.
Ryan's sister Rosie is able to convince Detective Mickey Ferguson that her brother is innocent. Separately, they both go in search of the real culprit. Cornered on two sides, the psychopathic Martin ruthlessly clears several witnesses and confidants out of the way until he is finally caught and shot by Ferguson.
