action

Link Jones rides into Crosscut to catch the train to Fort Worth. On behalf of his community, he should find a teacher for the school. He gives a wrong name when the marshal approaches him. At the train station he met the player Sam Beasley, who introduced him to the singer Billie Ellis as a possible teacher during the train ride. You are overheard by another passenger.

During an intermediate stop, the train is attacked by three bandits. The fourth bandit, who is on the train, knocks down Link and takes the money for the teacher from him. The train driver can escape with the train and passengers. Besides Link, Sam and Billie also stay behind. Link, who knows the area from before, leads them to a lonely hut to spend the night there.

Unexpectedly they meet Coaley, Trout and Ponch in the hut, who were responsible for the attack. Alcutt, the fourth bandit on the train, lies fatally wounded in the next room. When the leader Dock Tobin shows up, it becomes clear that Link himself was once a member of the gang. To protect his companions, he pretends to be Billie as his wife and declares that he wants to be part of the gang again. Coaley feels challenged by Link, shoots Alcutt and forces Billie to undress in front of everyone else by holding a knife to Link's throat.

The next morning, Claude arrives, whom Link has known from an early age. The gang is divided as to whether they can still trust Link. Dock prevails and decides one last big raid in Lassoo. During the drive there there is a fight in which Link takes revenge on Coaley and strips him off in front of his cronies. The humiliated man tries to shoot Link. Sam intervenes and is shot. Coaley dies in Dock.

Billie explains her affection to Link, but he is already married and has two sons. Link should prove himself and scout out the situation in the city. The silent Trout goes along as a guard and receives an order from Claude to kill Link. Lassoo turns out to be a ghost town. Trout shoots the resident she finds, an old Mexican who lives there with her husband, and dies herself. Link is now waiting for Claude and Ponch and can turn them off. When Link returns to the camp, he discovers Billie who has been subjected to violence. He found Dock, who did not survive the exchange of fire, and found the community money from him. Link and Billie return.

Reviews

"One of the most famous westerns of the 50s, which is above average in presentation and design, but whose pseudo-morality and numerous hardships remain questionable."

"In terms of content, a remarkable Wild West film, but in terms of design, brutal and sultry to an alarming degree."

background

The screenplay by Reginald Rose was based on the novel The Curse of the Outlaw or The Western Man by Will C. Brown.

For lead actor Gary Cooper it was the second collaboration with Julie London after Storm over the Pacific and his only film with director Anthony Mann , which delivered his tenth and last completely wacky western here.

The United Artists brought the film shot in CinemaScope to the German cinemas in 1959. In this synchronized version, which is still in use today, Gary Cooper got the voice of Heinz Engelmann .
