Jack Lord
Jack Lord (born December 30, 1920 in New York City , New York , † January 21, 1998 in Honolulu , Hawaii ; actually John Joseph Patrick Ryan ) was an American film and theater actor as well as a film director and film producer .
Life
Jack Lord - his stage name he borrowed from a relative of the family - was the son of William Lawrence Ryan, the owner of a merchant shipping line. At the age of 15, Lord began accompanying his father on his travels during the school holidays. The boy used his talent for drawing to capture numerous landscapes he visited on paper, including Africa , China and Europe .
After leaving school, visited Lord the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London ( Connecticut ), where he made it to the rank of ensign managed. Lord served shortly afterwards in World War II and after his dismissal decided to give it a try as a draftsman. Much of his work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Shortly thereafter, the Korean War broke out and Lord was reactivated. Thanks to his talent for capturing images, he was given the job of making maritime educational films. During this work, he developed the desire to become an actor and filmmaker. In order to finance his studies at a New York theater, Lord worked as a salesman for Cadillacs . 1949 was Lord his debut as an actor in the drama Project X .
Jack Lord was mainly seen in television series, including most recently Hawaii Five-Zero . In this series, he also directed six episodes. Lord was offered his most famous film role in 1962. In James Bond, Dr. No , the first film in the James Bond series, he played the CIA agent Felix Leiter . In the following Bond films, this role fell to other actors. Lord had also been a candidate for the role of Captain Kirk in Starship Enterprise . However, his request to produce the series was turned down by Gene Roddenberry , and William Shatner received the part.
In 1942, while still serving in the military, Jack married Lord Ann Willard. Their son died in a traffic accident at the age of 13. The marriage ended in divorce after just five years. His second marriage to Marie Denarde, which was concluded in 1954, lasted until Lord's death.
Jack Lord, who spent the last 18 years of his life in seclusion in Hawaii, died of heart failure one month after his 77th birthday . In recognition of his role as Steve McGarrett in the series Hawaii Five-Zero and the attention it received for the island state, but also in memory of a man who was always considered a philanthropist and who valued and loved the life and people of Hawaii, the In 2004 a bust was unveiled south of Waikiki Beach in memory of Jack Lord.
