action
The film is set in New Mexico , United States , in the 1870s . The large landowner TC Jeffords owes his wealth in the appropriation of large agricultural areas, above all through the unscrupulous displacement of Mexican farmers in the region. His daughter Vance follows him in temperament and unrestrainedness. She is a domineering, self-righteous person. Her brother Clay has a critical relationship with his father, which he mainly reproaches for treating his mother like a piece of property and not even treating him dignified on her deathbed. Clay and TC can't stand each other. Vance, on the other hand, is her father's darling and adores him in return. One evening, Clay meets his sister in their mother's room, where she tries on one of her dresses for Clay's upcoming wedding to Carol Ann Weadick. Then the father comes home from San Francisco, with the bank manager Reynolds and his accountant Scotty Hyslip in tow. Because although TC Jeffords has large livestock and land holdings, at this point he lacks the cash to meet ongoing obligations. He has just borrowed $ 100,000 from the old Anaheim banking house in San Francisco to meet the demands. TC is considering passing the farm on to his daughter. But shortly before the farm is handed over to Vance, TC is shot.
