Wendell Reid Corey (born March 20, 1914 in Dracut , Massachusetts , † November 8, 1968 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor and politician.

life and career

Wendell Corey was the son of US actors Milton Rothwell Corey and Julia Etta McKenney. He graduated from high school in Springfield . He began his career on the theater stage, where he met his future wife Alice Wiley in the late 1930s . With her he had four children together - Jonathan, Jennifer, Bonnie Alice and Robin. He made his Broadway debut in 1942 ( Comes The Revelation ). After several supporting roles and his first theatrical success in a leading role ( Dream Girl 1945), he was discovered for Hollywood by producer Hal B. Wallis . He signed a contract with Paramount Pictures .

His film debut in 1947 as a gangster in Desert Fury was an instant US success. During his short film career he played alongside big stars. He is known, among other things, as a policeman and old friend of James Stewart in The Window to the Courtyard . He often appeared in western films.

Corey was also involved in politics since 1956 and was elected a Republican to the Santa Monica City Council in 1965 . Wendell Corey was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( Oscar ) from 1961 to 1963 and was also a member of the Screen Actors Guild. In 1966 he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives , but he had already lost his party's primary election , so that he remained on the city council until his untimely death. On November 8, 1968, Wendell Corey died unexpectedly of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 54; years of alcoholism took its toll. He was buried in Washington, Massachusetts.
