Life

As the son of a singer, Lloyd came into contact with show business at an early age and moved to Canada in 1910, where he toured with a theater company. In 1913 Carl Laemmle signed him for Universal Pictures and gave him his first roles in short silent films . A year later he made his first short film as a director for the Nestor Film Company. By 1915 he directed 25 films. His greatest commercial success to date was Flowers of the North , through which he aroused the interest of competing film studios.

In 1916 he moved to William Fox , where he mainly directed literary adaptations such as Les Miserables from 1921 and Oliver Twist from 1922. The adaptation of Black Oxen brought Corinne Griffith the greatest success of her career in 1923 . For his film The Uncrowned Queen , also with Corinne Griffith, he received his first Oscar for best director in April 1930 . In the same year he was nominated for two more films in the same category.

In contrast to many other directors, Lloyd had no problems with the transition to sound film . For Kavalkade , the film adaptation of the play of the same name by Noël Coward , he received his second Oscar for Best Director in 1934. The director received his last Oscar nomination two years later for the adventure film Mutiny on the Bounty with Charles Laughton and Clark Gable in the leading roles. In the mid-1930s, he mainly worked as a film producer for Fox, Paramount and Universal. During this time he produced the Hitchcock film Saboteure, among other things .

In 1945 he retired from the film business, but returned from retirement in 1954 to direct the thriller Hotel Shanghai and the western The Barricades of San Antonee .

He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his services to the film .
