This Woman Is Mine (alternatively Fury at Sea ) is an American Adventure - Drama of Frank Lloyd from the year 1941. The main roles are filled by Franchot Tone , John Carroll and Walter Brennan and Carol Bruce , Nigel Bruce and Leo G. Carroll .

The plot goes back to Gilbert Wolf (f) Gabriel's story I, Jack Lewis , published in New York in 1932.

action

The year is 1810 when John Jacob Astor in New York plans and finances a two-year expedition into the wilderness of Oregon to get furs there. He lets Scottish fur traders Duncan MacDougall and Angus McKay know that he's sending them Robert Stevens, a top man, at first glance a rather inconspicuous type of accountant. The rest of the crew of the expedition consists of a group of rough, partly stumbled French-Canadian trappers, led by Ovide de Montigny.

Shortly before, in a public café, Ovide met the somewhat naive singer Julie Morgan, who fell head over heels in love with him. He tells her that he lives in Paris and that he will take her there with him. Since Julie wants to be with Ovide, she assumes that the ship on which the trapper piloted her under an excuse is on its way to Paris. In her imagination she already sees herself singing in Parisian cafés. When she discovers that it is a cargo ship that has taken a completely different course, she is very angry with Ovide.

Captain Thorne, who commands the "Tonquin" and caught Julie as a stowaway, is by no means ready to turn back again. He is also unwilling to listen to Robert Stevens and claims that he smuggled Julie on board. He instructs the crew to treat Carol, who is now forced to make the trip, like a cabin boy. Ovide fails to clear up the misunderstanding that he brought Julie on board, leading to a rupture between him and Robert.

In the course of the voyage there are many problems, not only that Ovide and Robert become rivals for Carol, but also dealing with the tyrannical captain is not always easy. And then Julie falls overboard, but is saved by Ovide. After the ship sets course for the Falkland Islands, Thorn refuses to let Julie go ashore, but is persuaded by Robert, MacDougall and McKay to let her go. Julie then asks Ovide to marry her, but he refuses. Only now does Julie realize what the trapper's intentions are and runs away. Since the Tonquin has to continue sailing, Thorn decides to continue the voyage without Julie, but arouses the undisguised anger of Robert, who even threatens to kill Thorn. Meanwhile, Ovide and Julie are back on board, but Robert is arrested for mutiny. Ovide now confesses the truth to the captain and agrees to marry Julie.

After the ship docks at the Pacific Fur Company's fur trading post at Fort Astoria on the Columbia River , Oregon, Thorn releases Robert but warns him not to return to the Tonquin unless he wants to land on trial for mutiny . The fur business is making slow progress, and the ship is still at its location two months later. The inland expedition turns out to be more difficult than hoped, and to make matters worse, Ovide breaks his leg in an argument with Robert. When Captain Thorn remains without news for a long time, he decides to steer the ship two hundred miles north to do business with another Indian tribe. When Robert learns of this, he fears that Thorn has been lured into a trap by the fraudulent Indian Lamazia. When Robert and Ovide learn that Julie is still on board, they go out of their way to warn Thorn. Robert injures himself while trying to cross a waterfall. Despite this impairment, he continues his search with Ovide. Her canoe reaches Lamazie's tribe just as Lamazie is about to attack with his tribal brothers. Robert sneaks onto the ship, gets Julie and warns Thorn. At that moment the Indians attack. Ovide and Thorn do not survive the attack. When Thorn realizes that he can no longer escape defeat and death, he blows up the ship the moment Robert and Julie are safely ashore. The well-known Native American opera singer and actor Chief Yowlachie is said to have starred in the role of Chief On-Eye Comcomly and taught the actors the language of the Chinooks. The actor Roger Imhof, originally named for the role of John Jacob Astor, does not appear in the film, it is possible that he was replaced by Sig Ruman at the beginning of the production.

Production notes

Presumed appearance of Fort Astoria around 1811

The film was produced by Frank Lloyd Productions for Universal Pictures, Universal was also responsible for distribution. The film was shot from early May to early July 1941 at Universal Studios and on location in Lake Tahoe , California . A wooden fortress was erected similar to the actual Fort Astoria, built by the Astor expedition in 1810. The replica fort was built by the Washoe Indian tribe on land leased from Harry Comstock, heir to the Comstock Lode estate. In order to comply with the Conservation Law, Universal had to commit to planting five hundred new trees to replace the trees felled to build the fort.

Jack Otterson and John B. Goodman were responsible for the production design, Russell A. Gausman for the film construction. Bernard B. Brown and William Hedgcock shared responsibility for the sound, and John P. Fulton for the visual effects. Vera West was responsible for the costumes, Charles Previn contributed to the musical design.

Gilbert Gabriel's novel was purchased by Paramount in 1936, according to a message in the film industry's journal The Hollywood Reporter . The studio was planning a film adaptation with Claudette Colbert in the lead role and directed by Frank Lloyd. In November 1940, Lloyd, together with his partner Jack Skirball, acquired the previously unprocessed play from Paramount and planned to film it for Universal . The Los Angeles Examiner reported that Lloyd actor John Carroll of MGM have borrowed and have unsuccessfully tried the actress Priscilla Lane by Warner Bros. to get the role of Julie. For Carol Bruce, this was her first appearance in a feature film, having previously given a singer in the short film Koo Koo Correspondance Skool in 1937 and starred as a musical star on Broadway in productions such as Louisiana Purchase .

reception

criticism

Theodore Strauss didn't like the film in the New York Times . He wrote that in the last few seconds of the film there was a thunderous explosion that destroyed the ship 'Tonquin'. This explosion is also suitable to wake up all spectators who have since fallen asleep. Although Frank Lloyd directed the film and featured actors such as Franchot Tone, Walter Brennan and John Carroll , 'This Woman Is Mine' is only a lukewarm adventure film. Instead of telling a funny story of men who had to stand up to the sea and the wilderness, the story of the beautiful stowaway is celebrated, who undertakes a two-year expedition with almost 200 strong men. She also tempted the captain, and the rivals embodied by Mr. Tone and Mr. Carroll were particularly foolish. It was hard to believe that Astor would ever have entrusted such hot-headed men with such an expedition. As a result, the trip with the 'Tonquin' is about as exciting as an expedition in the tub. The sea and the wilderness are only painted backdrops, in the foreground stands alone and always Miss Bruce. Although she can sing enchantingly and her looks offer a refreshing change from typical Hollywood style, she reads her text as if she were in a graduation exercise. The male actors fought more successfully against the script. It is surprising, however, that Mr. Lloyd, who created such exciting adventure films as Mutiny on the Bounty , never got this story under control. The result is an ordinary and trivial romantic episode in which the characters are too ridiculous to be interesting for themselves.

Hal Erickson wrote on Allmovie that one would not assume from the title that the film is a seafaring story that revolves around the fur trade in the north. Ship's captain Thorn (Walter Brennan) is a strict boss in the tradition of Captain Bligh . Although the expected romantic triangle developed, it fell behind when Thorn's ship was besieged by hostile Indians on the banks of the Columbia River. A literally explosive closing sequence at least compensates for the narrative folly that preceded it.

Halliwell's Film Guide saw This Woman Is Mine as “a reasonably well-produced but unexciting time drama”, for the Movie & Video Guide this film was the “usual love triangle”.

Award

Richard Hagemann was nominated for the award at the Academy Awards in 1942 in the category "Best Film Music" (Drama) , but had to give way to Bernard Herrmann and the fantasy drama The Devil and Daniel Webster .

Johann Jakob Astor

Johann Jakob Astor, detail of an oil painting by Gilbert Stuart, 1794

Astor, English John Jacob Astor (1763–1848), was a German-American entrepreneur who made his fortune primarily through fur trading and real estate. He was the richest man and the first multimillionaire in America at the time. He left about $ 20 million, two hotels, a theater, numerous properties, and a large number of stocks. After he had married the American Sarah Todd, whose ancestors came from Scotland, in 1785, he made enough money with the 300 dollars Todd brought into the marriage that he was able to put his fur business on a broader basis. In 1808, with the support of the third American President Thomas Jefferson, he founded the American Fur Company . The expedition paid for by Astor reached the Columbia River in 1811 as the first with his ship "Tonquin" and founded the settlement of Astoria .
