Russell A. Gausman
Russell A. Gausman (* 4. July 1892 in St. Louis , Missouri ; † 20th May 1963 in Los Angeles , California ) was a two Oscars excellent American art director .
Life
Gausman began his career in 1931 when he got a job with Universal Studios . Until his retirement in 1960, he worked exclusively for Universal for 29 years. His first film was the classic horror film Dracula with Bela Lugosi in the title role. At first he worked in the credits without naming his name. It wasn't until the late 1930s that his career took off, and Gausman was involved in much of Universal's horror films revolving around Frankenstein, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man. In addition, between 1942 and 1946 he was responsible for the production design of twelve films from the Sherlock Holmes film series with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the leading roles.
He had been nominated for an Oscar three times since 1942; Gausmann received his first Oscar in 1944 for Phantom of the Opera . After having worked on the James Stewart film classic My Friend Harvey in 1950, among other things , he worked repeatedly with director Jack Arnold during the 1950s , including his B-movie genre classics Danger from Space and Tarantula . Another classic film he worked on was Orson Welles Film noir Under the Signs of Evil . Towards the end of his career he worked on the comedies Bettgeflüster and Company Petticoat . One of his last films was the Stanley Kubrick's monumental film Spartacus , for which he was awarded his second Oscar the following year. He died in 1963 just a few years after his retirement.
