action
Ygor, who was gunned down by Wolf Frankenstein years ago, still lives in the ruins of Frankenstein Castle and is looking for the monster who fell into the seething sulfur pit. On a stormy night with lightning and thunder, he finally found what he was looking for: the indestructible "creature" also survived, enormously weakened.
The hunchback already has an idea how to help his friend regain old strength. Together they make their way to the town of Vasaria, where the second son of the old Baron Frankenstein, Dr. Ludwig Frankenstein, lives and works as a doctor and head of an institution for the mentally disturbed.
No sooner have Ygor and his companion arrived in Vasaria than the monster befriends a little girl and kills two residents, after which he is overwhelmed and captured. Ygor is looking for Dr. Frankenstein and threatens to publicly expose him if he does not help him to free and heal the creature again. The monster is brought to justice, where it breaks out in the course of the trial and takes Ygor to Dr. Frankenstein flees. The monster kills the assistant Dr. Kettering. By using anesthetic gas, Dr. Frankenstein overwhelm him and Ygor. A vision of his late father arouses his scientific curiosity, and so Ludwig and his colleague Dr. Bohmer started swapping the monster's brain. When Ygor offers his own brain for transplant, Dr. Frankenstein took him away: he is not ready to give an invincible body to a scoundrel.
Instead, he wants the creature to be Dr. Use Kettering because he was a person with character and thirst for knowledge. Frankenstein uses the brain and the creature actually opens its eyes a few hours later. However it speaks with Ygor's voice.
He got in touch with Dr. Bohmer, who has long been jealous of Frankenstein's success, which he was denied because of a malpractice committed a long time ago. Ygor has promised him power, fame and fortune if he swapped the brains so that the hunchback can become immortal in the body of the monster.
When Ygor Dr. Bohmer instructs to put gas into the house to kill the invading residents, he suddenly goes blind. Frankenstein explains that Ygor and the creature have different blood types and therefore the sensory nerves are not supplied. Ygor gets mad and hurls Dr. Bohmer in his rage against one of the power generators, only to break the laboratory to rubble, causing it to catch fire.
Elsa Frankenstein escapes the fire thanks to the help of her fiancé Erik, while the creature, Dr. Bohmer and Dr. Frankenstein to be buried under the burning rubble.

Others
- Allegedly the mask part that Lon Chaney jun. in Frankenstein returns had to wear again, extremely uncomfortable. It sat right on his forehead and constantly pressed on his eyes, which he complained about several times. He once asked that the mask part be removed from him, but no one listened to him. Annoyed, he tore the makeup off himself and with it a gaping wound on his forehead. The shooting had to be interrupted for several days.
- After Boris Karloff, who starred in the Broadway hit Arsenic and Lace Cap at the time, had no interest in slipping back into the role of Frankenstein's monster, producer George Waggner decided that the creature's signature appearance should not change. He was concerned that, on the one hand, it would not be successful without Karloff and, on the other hand, that the public would not accept any change in the appearance of the popular monster.
- The first draft of the script by Eric Taylor was considered too depressing by Universal. The renowned author Scott Darling was commissioned to revise the script.
- Because of the surprising popularity of Bela Lugosi's role, he was allowed to return as Ygor in Frankenstein Returns .
- Chaney jun. was cast while he was still filming Der Wolfsmensch .
- During the breaks from filming Frankenstein returns , Chaney jun. the kids on set often have ice cream to show them that "the monster" isn't really bad.
