Leyland Hodgson

Leyland Hodgson ( 5. October 1892 in London - 16th March 1949 in Hollywood , California , USA ) was an English actor.

Life

Leyland Hodgson first appeared on stage at the age of six. From 1915 to 1919 Hodgson appeared in the British provinces in the Orient with the Bandmann Opera Company , from 1920 to 1929 he was a stage actor in Australia and had his own drama company. In 1930 he moved to Hollywood. There he embodied mostly small, nameless roles in around 175 films. Some of these films are still extremely well known today, for example Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Rebecca , Michael Curtiz 's adventure film Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds or Charlie Chaplin's Hitler satire The Great Dictator (1940). He appeared several times as a supporting actor in the Sherlock Holmes films alongside Basil Rathbone . The tall, dark-haired actor usually embodied servants of all kinds, such as officers, reporters, butlers or chauffeurs.

Leyland Hodgson died in Hollywood at the age of 56.
