Assault on the Olive Branch is an American adventure film from 1940 set at the time of the British-American War . The screenplay is based on the novel Captain Marvin by Kenneth Roberts .

action

The Olive Branch is an American merchant ship. Under Captain Dorman, it is on its way back from the Far East in 1812. When the ship is attacked by an English brig , Dorman and his sailors realize that the US is at war with Britain. Lieutenant Strope, in command of the brig, fires at the Olive Branch . Captain Dorman is killed.

Dorman's daughter Corunna swears revenge, but her friend, the sailor Dan Marvin, advises caution. She mocks him with the nickname "Captain Caution" (German: captain caution). Corunna and the crew are taken prisoner by the English, and the merchant ship is carried as a prize. There are other prisoners on the ship: Lucien Argandeau, his wife Victorine and the slave trader Slade. When the brig in turn is attacked, the prisoners break out and regain control of the Olive Branch . Corunna takes command and makes Slade her chief mate. She wants to go to France to get a combat assignment against the British from the US consul there.

Once in France, Corunna is betrayed by Slade. He has reached an agreement with the English that the crew will be captured. In return, he should receive the ship. When Corunna leaves for the consul, the English board the ship and sail away with the crew. She meets Slade, who tells her that Marvin betrayed her. He gets her to sail away with him on the Olive Branch .

At the same time, Marvin and the sailors plan their escape. Marvin distracts the English soldiers with a fake boxing match while his people flee and hijack a yacht. Marvin is able to convince the English that he is looking for the Olive Branch with the yacht . When Marvin sees the Olive Branch , Slade fires at the unarmed yacht, revealing his betrayal to Corunna. Marvin and his men can regain control of the Olive Branch and deliver Slade to justice. Corunna realizes her misjudgment about Marvin and sails home with him.
