Miles Mander
Miles Mander (born May 14, 1888 in Wolverhampton , Staffordshire , England as Lionel Henry Mander (second stage name also: Miles Luther ); † February 8, 1946 in Los Angeles , California ) was a British actor , director , screenwriter and film producer .
Life
Miles Mander was born as the second son of the architect and businessman Theodore Mander into the respected and prominent Mander Family , which produced many industrialists and public officials. His older brother Geoffrey Mander (1882-1982) was a successful businessman and a member of the British Parliament. He began his acting career in 1920. His first appearance in a Sherlock Holmes production was in 1921 as Godfrey Norton in the silent film A Scandal in Bohemia . From 1926 Mander also worked as a director, initially making several short films until 1927. His greatest success as a director was recorded in 1928 with the British film The First Born , one of the first British sound films, which is regarded as outstanding by film critics. He made his debut as a screenwriter in 1924. As a producer, he was involved in four productions. In the mid-1930s, however, Mander gave up his career behind the camera and then concentrated completely on his acting career.
As an actor, Mander was seen in over 100 film productions until his death, initially often in leading roles, later mainly in larger and smaller supporting roles. He often embodied aristocrats or oily film villains. In Britain in the 1930s he starred in films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Murder - Sir John Intervenes! and the historical film The Private Life of Henry VIII with Charles Laughton in the title role. In 1932 he was seen as Claude Holford in the film The Missing Rembrandt . From the late 1930s he played regularly in Hollywood, including as Benjamin Disraeli in the period film Suez (1938) with Tyrone Power and in the role of the "stranger" Mr. Lockwood in William Wyler's literary adaptation Sturmhöhe (1939). Mander has also appeared in productions such as Ernst Lubitsch's Nazi satire Sein oder nicht sein (1942) or the film noir Murder, My Sweet (1944). He also had major roles in two Sherlock Holmes films with Basil Rathbone .
Miles Mander was since 1912 with Pratibha Devi (1891-1923), a daughter of the Maharajas Nripendra Narayan of Cooch Behar and his wife Suniti Devi , married; his brother Alan married their sister Sudhira Devi (1894–1968) two years later. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1946 at the age of 57.
