His first appearance in a Sherlock Holmes production was in 1921 as Godfrey Norton in the silent film A Scandal in Bohemia . From 1926 Mander also worked as a director, initially making several short films until 1927. His greatest success as a director was recorded in 1928 with the British film The First Born , one of the first British sound films, which is regarded as outstanding by film critics. He made his debut as a screenwriter in 1924. As a producer, he was involved in four productions. In the mid-1930s, however, Mander gave up his career behind the camera and then concentrated completely on his acting career.

Mander has also appeared in productions such as Ernst Lubitsch's Nazi satire Sein oder nicht sein (1942) or the film noir Murder, My Sweet (1944). He also had major roles in two Sherlock Holmes films with Basil Rathbone .

Miles Mander was since 1912 with Pratibha Devi (1891-1923), a daughter of the Maharajas Nripendra Narayan of Cooch Behar and his wife Suniti Devi , married; his brother Alan married their sister Sudhira Devi (1894–1968) two years later. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1946 at the age of 57.
