South Pagai ( Indonesian Pagai Selatan ) is part of the Mentawai Islands , an island group belonging to Indonesia around 130 kilometers southwest of Sumatra .

geography

South Pagai is around 55 km long and around 20 kilometers wide. In the north, separated from Sikakap by the strait , is the neighboring island of North Pagai , in the south, much further away, Enggano . The name Pageh is sometimes used for the two Pagai Islands . The highest elevation on the flat, hilly island, which is largely covered with primeval forests, is the 302 m high Gunung Muntai . Some settlements on South Pagai are Seai in the north, Simakalo and Mapooepooe in the east, Tiop in the south and Bulasat and Baleraksok in the west.

administration

South Pagai forms (with North Pagai) the district ( Kecamatan ) Pagai Utara Selatan , which belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Mentawai Islands formed in 1999 with the capital Tua Pejat (on Sipora ), which in turn is part of the province of West Sumatra .

population

After the last ice age, the island was separated from Sumatra by rising sea levels. Before 1000 BC South Pagai was settled from the north via Sipura and North Pagai. The inhabitants, also called Mentawai , differ from the inhabitants of Sumatra in terms of language and customs. They developed complex tattoos that are believed to be some of the oldest in the world. In 2000, there were 20,974 inhabitants on North and South Pagai. Tourism is modest but growing.

history

As early as the middle of the 18th century there was supposed to have been an attempt to settle in England on two small islands in the south of South Pagai in order to cultivate nutmeg or pepper . In 1792 John Crisp reached the Pagai Islands ( called Poggy by him ) on a ship belonging to the British East India Company . He noticed the amazing difference between the islanders and the people of nearby Sumatra. It was not until July 1864 that South Pagai became part of the Dutch East Indies . But until the 20th century there were hardly any attempts by the Dutch to influence the island .

From the mid-1990s, Australian surfers discovered North Pagai for surfing along with the other islands .

earthquake

There were strong seaquakes here as early as 1797 and 1833. After the seaquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 , seismic activity under the island has increased significantly. After the earthquake on September 12, 2007 , (cGPS) stations on South Pagai noted a displacement of 1.5 meters to the southwest, an uplift of 0.6 meters on the west coast and a decrease of 0.1 meters on the east coast - some offshore islands were enlarged and six new islands were created.

On February 11, 2010, another seaquake occurred 32 km southwest of South Pagai with 5.2 on the Richter scale. Southwest of the island was the epicenter of the seaquake on October 25, 2010 , which also triggered a tsunami that penetrated up to 600 meters into the island's interior.

fauna

Several endemic animal species live on the island , including the Pagai macaque , whose population is now endangered.
