history
Legend has it that the Minangkabau sailed from India to Sumatra in the first centuries AD . In the 14th century, the matriarchal Minangkabau kingdom emerged, which was shaped by Buddhism. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Sumatra was Islamized ; civil war marked the end of the kingdom at the end of the 17th century. Dutch merchants came to the region around 1680 and the British occupied the area in the 18th century . In 1825 the region and all of Sumatra became part of the Dutch-Indian colony; the Dutch were only able to pacify them after a long conflict (Padri War 1821–37). Since Indonesia's independence in 1949, Sumatra Barat has been one of the Indonesian provinces.
