population

In terms of population, Sulawesi Selatan ranks second behind the Sulawesi Tengah province (24.45% proportionately) and ranks 16th among all Indonesian provinces.

The province is inhabited by three great peoples, the Buginese (or Bugis), the Macassars and the Toraja in the north. Although their three languages are of Malay origin, they are difficult to understand one another.

89.69% of the population professes Orthodox Islam , called Senteri . Many Christians live in the highlands in the north of the province (700,974 Protestants and 15,559 Protestants: together 9.36% of the population in 2019). Pre-Islamic traditions, which played a role in everyday life for centuries after Islamization in the 15th century, have almost completely disappeared and are only shown to tourists.

history

Since the 14th century at the latest, there have been a number of smaller Hindu or Buddhist kingdoms in the region, which based their wealth primarily on trade, including Luwu, Bone and Gowa . The region was Islamized at the beginning of the 17th century. Makassar developed into a center of the spice trade and attracted European trading companies. In 1667 the Dutch East India Company established a fortress and a trading post in the city. At first the Dutch were only interested in trade. It was not until the first half of the 19th century that the area was completely subdued and colonial administration was established. After the Japanese occupation in World War II , Sulawesi Selatan became part of the now independent Indonesia in 1949.

As a province, Sulawesi Selatan was founded simultaneously with the Sulawesi Tenggara province on December 13, 1960 (Law No. 47/1960). The north-western part with five administrative districts was split off in October 2004 with Sulawesi Barat as a separate province.

  • The city ( Kota ) Polapo with 4 subdistricts became a separate administrative unit in April 2002 by splitting off from the administrative district Luwu (Law No. 11/2002).
  • The newly formed administrative district of Luwu Timur with 8 subdistricts was separated from the administrative district of Luwu Utara in February 2003 (Law No. 7/2003).
  • The newly formed Toraja Utara administrative district was spun off from the Tana Toraja administrative district in March 2008 with 21 subdistricts (Law No. 28/2008).

economy

The main industry is agriculture. Among other things, rice , coffee and cocoa are grown . Fishing is of particular importance, and some of it is still practiced in the traditional way. Mining (nickel) and industry play a subordinate role. Tourism is concentrated on the Tanah Toraja highlands and the coastal town of Bira (Sulawesi) in the southeast of the province.
North of Makassar is the Valley of the Butterflies - a national park near the town of Maros.
