history

After the Islamization of the region in the 15th century, four sultanates emerged here . In 1844 these were colonized by the Dutch , but they continued to resist, even under the Japanese occupation in World War II (1941–45). After the war, the Federation of the Four Kingdoms joined the State of Indonesia and became Kalimantan Timur Province in 1957. In 2012 the new province of Kalimantan Utara was separated from Kalimantan Timur .

In summer 2019, the Indonesian government announced that it would move the seat of government from Jakarta to East Kalimantan in 2024. The as yet unnamed new capital is to be built on previously forested state-owned land in the administrative districts of Penajam Nordpaser and Kutai Kertanegara near the cities of Balikpapan and Samarinda .

In November 2012, four administrative districts ( Kabupaten 65.04 Bulungan, 64.06 Malinau, 64.05 Nunukan and 64.10 Tana Tleid) and the (independent) city ( Kota ) Tarakan (area code: 64.73) were split off to form the province of Kalimantan Utara .

In January 2013, the new administrative district Mahakam Ulu with five sub-districts was formed from parts of the administrative district of Kutai Barat (Wet Kutai).

population

The population consists mainly of indigenous Dayak (-Benuaq) and Malays .

At the end of 2019, 87.33% of the population were Islamic, 7.61% of the population were Protestants and 4.38% were Catholics. Other religions each made up less than one percent of the population.

economy

Kalimantan Timur is considered the most economically advanced province in the Indonesian part of Borneo. Crude oil and natural gas are extracted, other branches of the economy are mining ( gold , diamonds ), the timber industry and agriculture. Their expansion into the primary rainforest is intensified by the Indonesian transmigration program . The price for this lies in the massive deforestation of the forests and the threat to the island's unique wildlife, which creates major ecological problems.

There are large coal deposits in the province . Half of the national consumption is supplied from here; around 70 percent of the coal mined is exported abroad.

The largest companies active in coal mining are PT Kaltim Prima Coal (65% PT Bumi Resources Tbk, 30% Tata Power Ltd., 5% PT Kutai Timur Energi, PT Berau Coal (51% PT Armadian Tritunggal, 39% Rognar Holding BV (Netherlands), 10% Sojitz Corporation (Japan) and PT Kideco Jaya Agung (49% Samtan Co Ltd (South Korea), 46% PT Indika Energy Tbk, 5% PT Muji Inti Utama)).
