West Nusa Tenggara ( Indonesian Nusa Tenggara Barat , NTB ) is an Indonesian province in the Nusa Tenggara region (in German "southeastern islands"). The east neighboring province in the region is East Nusa Tenggara ( Indonesian Nusa Tenggara Timur , NTT). West Nusa Tenggara consists of the islands of Lombok , Sumbawa and a few smaller islands. The capital of the province is Mataram on Lombok.

80% of the province's population are Muslim, 16% Hindus (Balinese) and 4% animists. Less than 1% are Christians or Buddhists. The most important people in Lombok are the Sasak , while the Balinese and Chinese are a minority. Two different ethnic groups live on Sumbawa, each with their own language, Samawa and Bima. The 2010 census found that the province had a population of 4,496,855 people, 70.4% of whom lived in Lombok, which, however, only takes up 22.9% of the area. In January 2014, the population was estimated at 4,702,389. The province of Nusa Tenggara Barat is one of the least developed regions in all of Indonesia. In 2005, numerous cases of malnutrition and kwashiorkor were recorded . Life expectancy in Nusa Tenggara Barat is the lowest of all 33 provinces in Indonesia at just 54 years, with a total life expectancy of 69 years, and at the same time child mortality is by far the highest in the entire state at 112 (71).
