The province is one of the poorest in Indonesia, 40% of the population lives in poverty.
In addition to the original Lampung, the inhabitants are largely Javanese , Balinese and Madurese settled in the course of the Transmigrasi , most of them are Muslims . Recently, social and ethnic tensions have been eroding into open violence. Increased intervention by the security forces became necessary.
history
Megalithic sculptures document the settlement of the region since the Neolithic Age . Due to its location on the Sunda Strait, trade has always played an important role; in the early Middle Ages it belonged to the Srivijaya Empire , then to a Malay kingdom. From the 16th century, Islam spread and the Sultanate of Banten ruled the area. At the end of the 17th century the Dutch established their first bases and were able to get all of Lampung under their control by the 19th century. Krakatau Island , made famous by the volcanic eruption of 1883, belongs to the province .
In 1949 Lampung became part of Indonesia.
