Bengkulu (Bangka Ulu, Benkulen, Dutch Benkoelen) is a province on the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra . The province, which has existed independently since 1968, is the third smallest province on the island of Sumatra. With 19,919.33 km² it covers around 2.5% of the island's area. The province's capital of the same name, Bengkulu , has almost 370,000 inhabitants (as of 2019).
geography
The province borders in the northwest on the province Sumatra Barat (about 35 km border line), in the northeast on the province Jambi (about 115 km), in the southeast on the province Sumatra Selatan (about 480 km) and in the southwest on the province Lampung (about 35 km border line). In addition to a narrow, approximately 525 km long coastal strip, the province mainly includes parts of the Barisan Mountains , which run through the entire island. The province also includes the remote island of Enggano (in the administrative district of Bengkulu Utara) and nine smaller islands.

history
The British East India Company established a trading post (called Bengcoolen ) in Bengkulu in 1685 after being driven out of Bantam on the island of Java in 1682 . Fort Marlborough was built in 1714 and is still standing today. Thomas Stamford Raffles became governor in 1817. From 1825 the area belonged to the Dutch , and since Indonesia's independence in 1949 it has been a province.
The earthquake of June 4, 2000 with a magnitude of 7.9 and epicenter near the town of Tais killed 117 people and injured over 1,300. A series of other earthquakes claimed 13 lives in September 2007.
Economy and tourism
Coal and gold mining has played an important role since colonial times . The main agricultural products include ginger , pepper , coconuts and coffee . In the valleys of the Barisan Mountains and in the coastal lowlands, intensive rice farming can be carried out. The tourism is gaining importance.
religion
90% of the population are Muslims, 7% Hindus, the rest are minorities of Christians and Animists.
