Sumatra Selatan (German South Sumatra ) is a province in the southeast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra .

geography

With an area of ​​91,592 km², South Sumatra is the fifth largest province of Sumatra. The mainly flat, swampy eastern part of the province is traversed by large rivers and dominated by the river delta of the 750 kilometer long Musi . Other rivers are: Ogan Komering, Lematang, Batanghari, Leko, Lalang and Rawas. High mountains are Dempo, Bepagut, Ulupalik and Seblat.

The islands of Bangka and Belitung off the coast were separated from Sumatra Selatan in 2000 as a separate province of Kepulauan Bangka-Belitung .

The province is one of the more backward Indonesians. Outside the capital, Palembang , transport routes and infrastructure are poorly developed. The economy is predominantly agricultural . The plains of South Sumatra are also an important growing area for oil palms . Due to the expansion of cultivation since around 2005, large areas of the lowland rainforest have been cleared. However, there are also best management practice plantations that minimize the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and plant ground cover against erosion.

The Kabupaten Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir and Musi Rawas Utara were formed in 2003 by splitting off from the Kabupaten Muara Enim and Musi Rawas.

history

In the early Middle Ages, the Srivijaya Empire was located on the site of the present-day province and expanded into an important trading empire due to its location near the Strait of Malacca . In the 19th century Sumatra Selatan came under Dutch colonial administration . Since 1949 it has been the province of Indonesia, which has since been independent.

population

The population is divided into several ethnic groups , with Malays being the majority. In the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the region was Islamized by Arabs and Indian sailors from Gujarat , whereby pre-Islamic traditions have been preserved, as in many parts of Indonesia . 97.1 percent of the population are Sunni Muslims , the proportion of Christians is 1.56 percent (2019: 79,630 Protestants, 49,535 Catholics).
