Palembang is an Indonesian city ​​in the southeast of the island of Sumatra . It is the second largest city on the Sumatra Island after Medan . It forms the capital of the province of South Sumatra .

Palembang is one of the oldest cities in the Malay Archipelago and of Southeast Asia . Palembang is on the Musi River on the east coast of South Sumatra; the city extends over 369.22 square kilometers and is home to around 1.8 million people. That makes Palembang the sixth largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta , Surabaya , Bandung , Medan and Semarang .

The Musi River divides the city into Seberang Ilir with the economic and cultural center on the northern bank and Seberang Ulu with the political center on the southern bank. The city is the administrative center and transshipment point for the nearby oil fields and rubber plantations . Refineries, shipbuilding and iron processing are also economically important. There has been a university since 1960 .

Palembang has several ports (Boom Baru, 36 Ilir and Tanjung Api-api), including ferry connections to Bangka Island and Banten . Traditional speedboats, called ketek , transport passengers along the river banks.

Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport offers national and international connections.

From the 5th to the 11th century Palembang was the capital of the Buddhist empire of Srivijaya , the decline began in the 11th century with pirate raids from Java and southern India . Since the Islamization of Sumatra in the 16th century, it has been the capital of a sultanate . The Dutch influence began in the 17th century, in 1825 the sultanate was abolished and the city came under Dutch colonial administration , which lasted until the independence of Indonesia 1949th
