Bangka (including Banka ) is east of Sumatra in the karimata strait situated Indonesian island.

It is 11,942 km² and is inhabited by around 600,000 people. It is separated from Sumatra by the 11 to 27 km wide Bangka Strait . To the east lies the neighboring island of Belitung . Both islands form the Indonesian province of Bangka-Belitung . The main town is Pangkalpinang .

The island consists mainly of low, partially swampy plains from which several isolated granitic mountains rise up to 654 m.

Important industries are the cultivation of pepper and the mining of tin , which leads to considerable environmental damage. The tin sand is deposited more or less deeply below the surface all over Bangka. Since 1832, tin mining has been carried out exclusively by Chinese miners. At the end of the 19th century, the Chinese made up about 30% of the population.

Bangka was ceded by Sultan Akhmed Nadscha-Muddin in 1812 to the English, who left them to the Dutch in the treatise of August 13, 1814.

The island's fauna is not particularly extensive, but includes a number of smaller mammals that are unique to the island , such as local species of squirrels and pittas . In general, the wildlife of Bangka shows more ties to the Malay Peninsula than to Sumatra.

After the population had led a nomadic life for centuries, they were forced to settle in permanent villages in the 19th century.

On February 16, 1942, 21 Australian military nurses were shot dead by Japanese soldiers in the Bangka massacre on Radji Beach.
