Choo Hoey

Choo Hoey ( Chinese  朱 暉  /  朱 晖 , Pinyin Zhū ​​Huī ; born October 20, 1934 in Palembang , Indonesia ) is a Singaporean conductor of Chinese origin.

Choo was born in Sumatra to Chinese immigrants . His father is a Minnan Chinese from Chaozhou and his mother is from Nanjing . In 1946 he came to Singapore with his family. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he made his debut in 1958 with the Orchester National de Belgique . He has conducted a number of well-known European orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Orchester de la Société du Conservatoire , the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich , the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchester de la Suisse Romande . In Greece he directed the Athens State Orchestra (Κρατική Ορχήστρα Αθηνών), the Orchestra of the Greek National Opera (Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή) and the Orchestra of the Greek Radio and Television.

In 1978 he was appointed chief conductor and musical director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), which he led until 1996 and which led to international success. In addition, he continued to work as a guest conductor in Europe and worked with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing. His repertoire includes classical and romantic European music literature as well as works by Asian composers. The soloists who performed under his direction include: a. Li Chuan Yun , Lynnette Seah , Lang Lang and Kun Woo Paik .
