London Philharmonic Orchestra

The London Philharmonic Orchestra (often abbreviated as LPO ) is based in London and is one of the most important orchestras in the United Kingdom . The main concert hall is the Royal Festival Hall .

history

The orchestra was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham and played its first concert on October 7th of the same year. As early as 1932 it became self-governing, i. H. Members of the orchestra make their own decisions on organizational matters.

Conductors

The orchestra's future principal conductors include Eduard van Beinum (1948–50), Adrian Boult (1950–57), William Steinberg (1958–60), John Pritchard (1957–67), Bernard Haitink (1967–79), Georg Solti (1979-83), Klaus Tennstedt (1983-87) and Franz Welser-Möst (1990-96). Kurt Masur took over this position in 2000 . Wladimir Jurowski has been chief conductor of the LPO since 2007 .

Film and popular music

In addition to numerous concerts of classical music, the LPO also recorded the soundtracks for various films, such as Lawrence of Arabia , Philadelphia and The Lord of the Rings: The Companions ; continues to be the soundtrack of the video game Xenosaga . Occasionally, the orchestra is also recording with pop music to hear about on Chick Corea's album Corea Concerto or Once and Dark Passion Play by Nightwish . In the mid-1990s, the LPO even released an album dedicated to the English rock band Led Zeppelin , which contains cover versions, including a rendition of Kashmir . In 2002 the orchestra recorded the soundtrack for the PS2 game The Getaway . In 2003, the LPO was also used to develop the theme song for the video game Tomb Raider - The Angel of Darkness .
