The Getaway ( German  Escape ) is a third-person shooter of the former British game developer Team Soho , the 2002 Sony was released. The production cost was five million pounds sterling , making it the most expensive European game to date . The successor is The Getaway: Black Monday , published in 2004 . A third part was announced and later canceled.

The Getaway is similar to the Grand Theft Auto video game franchise in that it also offers the ability to drive and walk freely around the city and steal cars. The use of firearms as well as hand-to-hand combat and car chases are also the main elements of the game, the difference being in the linear course of action and mission.

action

The Getaway has two storylines: In the first twelve missions, the player plays the newly released ex- bank robber Mark Hammond. Charlie Jolson - gangster boss of the criminal organization " Bethnal Green Mob" - forces Hammond to work for him again by killing his wife Susie and kidnapping their son Alex.

In the second twelve missions, the player plays the Flying Squad - police officer DC Frank Carter, who is investigating Jolson. Hence there is some overlap in the plot.

Details

The Getaway contains 24 missions and takes place in 2002 in the British capital - the metropolis of London , which has been realistically reproduced on 28 to 40 square kilometers. In addition to the usual automobile and pedestrian traffic, the streets are home to the police and rival gangs.

The missions are characterized by long driving sections that can take up to 20 minutes. The player can use up to 60 licensed vehicles that have a damage model . However, the game only minimally helps the player to find his way around: the vehicle indicators show the direction in which the player must drive. An overview map does not exist.

Another game element is the exchange of fire. For this purpose, the game offers an automatic aiming system and a cover system so that the player can look for cover behind objects - such as boxes - and shoot from them. The weapon selection at The Getaway is small - there are only four weapons in total: Glock 17 , AK-47 , Remington 870 and HK MP5 . The developers have not built in status displays such as ammunition and life display, so that the player has no information about how much ammunition the current weapon contains and how the character's health is. The reason for this was the aspect of making the game as realistic as possible.

The developers of The Getaway cast the game with real actors , who were built into the game in detail using motion capture . The British actress Anna Edwards was hired for the only female leading role . The video sequences during the missions were developed almost in film or cinema quality .
