Himmerland is a peninsula and historical landscape in northern Jutland in Denmark . The 2785 km² area borders on the Limfjord in the north and west and the Kattegat in the east . In the south, Mariagerfjord and the Skals Å river form the natural boundaries.

history

The sense of identity of the Himmerlanders is closely linked to the myth that the area was home to the warlike Cimbri up to Roman times . The geographer Claudius Ptolemy located it in the north of the Cimbrian Peninsula in the 2nd century . The Danish historiographer Claus Christoffersen Lyschander believed in 1622 that he could pinpoint their origins in Himmerland. The only clue for his theory was the phonetic similarity of cimbri / chimbri / himmer- . Other scientific evidence was lacking, and archaeological finds have so far revealed a complete excerpt of a population around the year 120 BC. Can not be proven.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, however, the idea of being the heirs of the Cimbri of world history took root in the collective consciousness. Johannes V. Jensen (1873–1950), from the Himmerland Farsø, who was born in the Nobel Prize for Literature , used the motif in his novel “Zug der Cimbern” ( Cimbrernes Tog , 1922). In Germany he was best known for his "Himmerlandsgeschichten" ( Himmerlandshistorier , 1898–1910). He described a "useless stubbornness" as a peculiarity of the Himmerlanders and combined it with both criticism and respect. Jensen identified himself with the eccentrics of the village farming community.

The sculptor Anders Bundgaard (1864–1937), who was born at Rebild , made the Cimbrian bull a symbol of Himmerland. In 1924 his granite sculpture Cimbrerstenen with the contours of a bull was installed in Rebild Bakker . The bronze sculpture Cimbrertyren has adorned Vesterbro Street in the center of Aalborg since 1937 .

The historical province of Himmer syssel (1231 Himbersysel ) comprised the following districts ( Herred ):

  • Års Herred
  • Fleskum Herred
  • Gislum Herred
  • Hellum Herred
  • Hindsted Herred
  • Hornum Herred
  • Beef Herred
  • Slet Herred

landscape

Himmerland is largely a moraine landscape that reaches an average height of 75 to 100 meters in the east. There is also the mountain Rold Bavnehøj , the highest point in Himmerland at 114 meters. The moraine landscape is divided into wide glacial channels , for example Gravledalen . Many of these channels were enlarged and leveled by meltwater deposits from the Vistula Ice Age and the penetration of the Littorina Sea.

The slopes of the valleys are furrowed by water erosion; any remaining hills are called "false hills" (falske bakker) , such as the Rebild Bakker chain of hills . They form a natural recreation area. The subsoil consists of limestone. In the past, lime was mined industrially in Aalborg for cement production . The Thingbæk lime mines at the foot of Rebild Bakker can be visited.

In the center of the peninsula lies the coniferous forest Rold Skov , which is the second largest closed forest area in Denmark with 80 km² . The Skov trend in West Himmerland was planted around 1900. In the north-west are the protected heather areas Oudrup Østerhede and Lundby Hede . To the east is the Lille Vildmose raised bog , the largest intact raised bog area within the northern European deciduous forest zone .

Cities and traffic

The largest cities in Himmerland were built on the Limfjord and Mariagerfjord. By far the largest city is Aalborg with 117,351 inhabitants. Other larger towns are Hobro (12130 inh.), Aars (8465 inh.) Støvring (8554 inh .), Hadsund (4971 inh.) As well as Nibe (5217 inh.) And Løgstør (4015 inh.).

The Nordjyske Motorvej motorway , a Danish section of the E45 , runs through the historic landscape . Himmerland is connected to the North Jutian island in the north by several bridges and a tunnel: Aggersundbroen near Løgstør ; in Aalborg railway bridge , Limfjordsbroen and Limfjord tunnel . At Hadsund, the Hadsundbroen leads south across the Mariagerfjord , and in the southwest the Virksunddæmningen road embankment leads towards Skive .
