Nibe is a small town on the Danish peninsula Himmerland . The city with around 5000 inhabitants is located on the Nibe Bredning , a tributary of the Limfjord . Since 2007 it has belonged to the large municipality of Aalborg , which is located in the Nordjylland region . Before that, from 1970 to December 2006, it was the center of the Nibe municipality . Nibe is located about 21 km west of Aalborg and 26 km east of Løgstør . The coat of arms reminds of the past as an important herring town.

history

Nibe was founded in the early Middle Ages as a fishing village, which was favored by the abundance of fish, especially herring, in the Limfjord. The place was first mentioned as Nyphering in 1376 . The old Danish term stands for the "Niber Hering", which was traded in northern German Hanseatic cities. When the trade moved to the larger neighboring town of Aalborg, the herring was sold as "Aalborger Nibehering" (old Danish: Alburgs nipherinch ). In the 15th century the place belonged to the Danish king, who employed his own "salters" there in the 15th century, who procured salt herring for the royal court and warships. In 1518 the residents were given the right to pickle and sell herring in exchange for a fee to the crown in Nibe .

Despite resistance from the Aalborg bourgeoisie, Frederick II gave permission in 1587 for two blacksmiths, two shoemakers and two tailors to settle in Nibe. The growth made Nibe the eighth largest town in Jutland in 1672 and the 16th place in Denmark. When the place finally received full market rights from Frederick IV in 1727 , Nibe had 1,600 inhabitants. That happened at a time when the herring fishery was already in decline. In 1765, Nibe was hit by a great fire that destroyed 127 farms and houses. In 1806 the city burned again. In 1825, after a storm surge in which the North Sea broke into the Limfjord near the Agger Tange headland , the next major catastrophe followed. After that, the herring disappeared from the Limfjord, so that in 1835 the Danish government proposed that Nibe be abandoned as a market town (købstad) . But the residents resisted. In 1866 the city got a modern port. The railway age began in 1899 with the construction of the Svenstrup –Nibe– Aars line and lasted until 1969. Today, part of the southern part of the railway line between Nibe and Vegger is a combined foot, bike and bridle path.

In an extensive urban restoration in the 1960s, many of the old roof tiles were replaced with fiber cement and cross windows with large panes. A 1974 plan ensured that the original cityscape was preserved by reversing many of the changes. The best restored house has received an award every year since 1980.

Today Nibe is a typically Danish small town in the Aalborg hinterland, where handicrafts are practiced and smaller factories have set up shop. Institutions and new companies have settled on the former railway site at the port and above the slopes. Settlements with single-family houses expand in a south-easterly direction.

Street scene, buildings and squares

Church of Nibe

The streetscape in the old town is dominated by closed rows of houses in front of large courtyards and gardens. Most of the many old houses were built after the fire of 1806. The general architectural style is influenced by the Biedermeier era - with local peculiarities. The foundation walls on the ground floor are whitewashed or yellow and have serrated cornices . Fjordgade , Mellemgade and Strandgade are among the best preserved streets.

The landmark of the former herring town is the whitewashed brick church Nibe Kirke . The building with the large pointed windows was built at the beginning of the 15th century when the herring fishery was still a source of wealth. Before the Reformation , the church was a Saint Just consecrated sanctuary . Extensive frescoes dating from around 1500 were uncovered there in 1992.

The merchant Søren Nielsen (1779–1839) built the first park in the city in 1820 to green the slopes. The work was continued by the pharmacist Annæus Nielsen (1839–1927), who is now commemorated by a monument in Nibe Anlæg Park .

The market square (Torvet) is where the old country roads to Aalborg, Hobro and Løgstør meet . When this part of the city was badly damaged in the fire of 1806, some houses were not rebuilt, so that with the Torvet a larger and paved square was created, which replaced the old, smaller market square (today Gammeltorv ) and where the farmers sell their goods could sell. There is the Nibe Museum , which is housed in the old town hall, court and prison of the city. The house houses a local historical archive and shows exhibitions about fishing in the Limfjord, among other things.
