The church in Hobro |
Hobro [ hoˈbʀoːʔ ] is a Danish trading town on the Mariagerfjord , which flows into the Baltic Sea. The city with 12,130 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is located in the Nordjylland region . Since the Danish municipal reform in 2007, the city has been part of the Mariagerfjord Municipality with Mariager as its center. The city got the name Hobro from a bridge, in Danish “bro”, which crossed the Onsild Å river .
history
Around 960–980, the Viking settlement of Fyrkat, surrounded by a ring wall, was built near Hobro . The exact founding date of the city itself is unknown. The name Hobro was first mentioned in 1449 ("Hobro fjord"). The port and trading town flourished early in the Renaissance. In the 19th century, with industrialization, population growth began. Mainly food factories emerged.
economy
The former agricultural trader Hobro still has a certain importance today as a fishing port and marina. Companies in the food industry and the tourism industry are important employers.
One of the most modern hydrogen plants in Europe is currently being built in Hobro and is due to be completed by 2017: In so-called power-to-gas plants, water is split into oxygen and hydrogen using wind power in the "Proton Exchange Membrane" process. The hydrogen can be stored and used in industry or to refuel fuel cell cars. The system can be started up within seconds. Six different companies are involved in the Danish “HyBalance” project that want to develop business models based on power-to-gas.
traffic
The place has good transport connections: the E 45 motorway passes the city and leads north to Aalborg and Frederikshavn and south to Randers , Aarhus , Skanderborg and Vejle .
Regional and express trains run from the station to Aalborg and Aarhus.
