The church of Oue is located in Oue between Hobro and Hadsund in the Mariagerfjord municipality in the Nordjylland region in Denmark.

Building history

Face relief on the south wall

The church was built around 1100. The church consists of the Romanesque nave and the later added tower that extends the nave to the west . The vestibule in the south - usually called the armory in Denmark , as the weapons brought along had to be deposited here when going to church - probably dates from the late 17th century. The church door on the south side is still in use today, while there are only faint traces of the entrance on the north side. To the right of the entrance hall there is a relief with a human face on the south wall.

The nave is flat covered with a beam ceiling. The vault in the choir with the frescoes is late Gothic. The bell was cast by Christian Christensens in late 1889.

Frescoes

Lime paintings on the ceiling of the choir

The frescoes on the ceiling of the choir were made by the same painter or workshop who made the paintings in the church of Hald south of Mariager Fjord in 1520 .

The fresco in the east above the altar table shows the Last Judgment . Christ is enthroned on the rainbow . The sword , the symbol of judgment, comes out of his mouth on the left . On the right from his right mouth comes a (nowadays difficult to recognize) lily , the symbol of grace . To the right of Christ is an angel with a trumpet at the top, with St. Mary below it. St. John is shown on the right. On the three other spandrels there are apostle representations with a total of at least 9 apostles. Due to the state of preservation of the pictures, it is not possible to identify all of them.

Rows of apostles around 1500 are particularly common in East Jutland east of a line from Mariager to Skanderborg , but the Oue Church is not the only exception to this expansion.

On the struts between the individual spandrels and on some white areas in them, the white background is decorated with ornaments attached using a stencil. Below the figures was the tendril pattern that was only well preserved in the northern gusset.

Further equipment

The altar consists mostly of white painted oak. The altarpiece in the Oue Church is a painting by Rud-Petersen from 1939. Behind Jesus, Martha and Maria, the mountains of Galilee can be seen in the background. They resemble the view from the church of the hills south of Mariager Fjord.

The former altar panel, probably made in the 16th century, can be seen in the back of the nave on the north wall.

The pulpit shows pictures of the four evangelists, which the painter Niels Heise created in 1709. The painter has put his signature on the book of John's Gospel. When the pulpit was restored in 1934, the restorer EC Nielsen put his signature in the Gospel of Mark.

The Romanesque font is made of granite and has smooth walls. Its base is shaped like a capital. The votive ship is a model of the Jutland frigate. The wooden offering box was created in 1743.

In the vestibule (armory) there is a tombstone from 1774 for Frederik Munck 1702–69 and Karen Lasse 1718–60.
