Randers ( listen ? / I ) is a port town in East Jutland , Denmark , about 40 km north of Aarhus and about 43 km east of Viborg . It is traversed by the Gudenå River, which flows into the Randerfjord. Due to its location on the elongated fjord named after the town, Randers is 25 km from the coast of the Kattegat . The Randers municipality (1970-2006) had an area of 154 km². As part of a new structural reform, the municipalities of Langå , Mariager , Nørhald , Purhus and Sønderhald merged in whole or in part with Randers on January 1, 2007 and have since formed the new Randers municipality (total area: 800.14 km² ). This belongs to the Midtjylland region (Central Jutland region). Audio file / audio sample

history

Randers was founded in the 11th century, but traces of a population go back to the time of the Vikings . Canute IV (approx. 1043-1086), also known as Canute the saint and patron saint of Denmark , had coins minted in the city. Peasants revolted in Randers against Knut and his plans to attack England . In this uprising the king was killed.

A chronicle of Essenbækkloster tells of a fire that devastated the city. The city was in the 12./13. Century destroyed three times, u. a. 1246, when the city was burned down by troops of his brother Abel during the uprising against King Erik IV .

In 1302 Randers was granted town charter.

In the city center is the house where Niels Ebbesen, according to legend, Count Gerhard III. killed on April 1, 1340. At that time all of Jutland and Funen were in the hands of the Counts of Schauenburg. The death of Gerhard led to the rebellion against the Germans. Ebbesen was killed in a battle near Skanderborg that same year . Today there is a statue in his honor in front of Randers Town Hall.

In 1350 the city was fortified under the rule of King Valdemar Atterdag. Seven years later the fortress was occupied by disaffected nobles. In 1359 the town was retaken by Valdemar.

In 1534, a peasant uprising failed in the attempt to storm the city, because massive moats in the reign of King Christian III. (1536–1559) had been built.

The city's port was not particularly large, but it had a good shipyard and some road connections, so that there was a boom in trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the height of this boom there were nearly 170 dealers in the area and a sizeable fleet that sailed around the world. Some old half-timbered buildings and merchant properties from this period can still be seen in the city today. Randers gained in importance and so the population of the city rose sharply during this time.
