Michael Julius Gravgaard (born April 3, 1978 in Randers ) is a former Danish soccer player and today's soccer official.
Club career
The headed central defender played at Spentrup IF in his youth . From 1996 to 2002 he played for Randers Freja and then until 2005 at Viborg FF , for whom he - partly as a center forward - scored 18 goals in 94 games. He then went to FC Copenhagen and then the French first division club FC Nantes .
On February 1, 2009, Hamburger SV loaned him to the end of the season to replace the injured Bastian Reinhardt in central defense. Gravgaard made his Bundesliga debut on February 7, 2009 at the away game of HSV against Karlsruher SC . After the season he returned to FC Nantes. After the 2009/10 season, in which he had not made a game for FC Nantes, he initially ended his career. On August 4, 2010, however, he denied that he was a sports invalid. On January 6, 2011, he finally ended his career.
National team
Gravgaard played his first game for the Danish national team on August 17, 2005 in a 4-1 win in the friendly against England in Copenhagen , where he scored his first international goal with a 3-0 goal. He also took part in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup and scored one goal each against Greece and Kazakhstan . The qualification was still missed. Gravgaard made his last international match on September 12, 2007 in a 4-0 win over Liechtenstein. He did not take part in a world or European championship in his career. In total, Gravgaard came to 18 caps and scored five goals.
Functionary career
Gravgaard became the new director of Randers FC , the successor to his former club Randers Freja , in January 2016 . On March 22, 2017, he was promoted to the club's sports director.
Oddities
Gravgaard's decisive role in the return leg of the 2009 UEFA Cup semi-final against Werder Bremen was curious when he caused a corner kick for Bremen when the score was 2-1. He had actually wanted to play a back pass to goalkeeper Frank Rost , but the ball touched a paper ball lying on the field and jumped up so unlucky that Gravgaard could only play the ball with his shin and the ball got uncontrolled into the goal. Frank Baumann converted the resulting corner to the decisive 3: 1. In this game Gravgaard also scored a goal for a possible 2: 2, but the referee refused recognition.
