Frank Rost (born June 30, 1973 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper, soccer coach and handball official.
family
Frank Rost comes from a successful family. His father Peter (* 1951) and his mother Christina Rost (* 1952) were successful national handball players in the GDR. He has been married since 1999 and has a daughter (* 2005).
Athletic career
Club career
In his youth, Rost first played as a striker for Lokomotive West Leipzig and Chemie Böhlen . He only became a goalkeeper at the age of 13, shortly before he moved to the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig performance center in 1986 .
In the summer of 1992, Rost moved from third division club 1. FC Markkleeberg to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga , where his professional career began. Initially, the young goalkeeper played mainly in the SV Werder reserve team. When Bremen's long-time regular keeper Oliver Reck moved to FC Schalke 04 in 1998 , Rost took over his position.
In 2002, Rost moved to FC Schalke 04. He was runner-up with Schalke in 2005 and was in the DFB Cup final, which was lost to FC Bayern Munich . In addition, Rost was in the league cup final in 2002, but was only able to win it in 2005. In the 2005/06 season, Frank Rost reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup with Schalke , but was defeated by FC Sevilla .
In the first half of the 2006/07 season, Rost was relegated to the bench by Schalke coach Mirko Slomka and replaced by 20-year-old Manuel Neuer . As a reason, Slomka stated that Rost had recently been missing "a bit of luck". Since Slomka was planning the sporting future with Neuer as the goalkeeper, Rost moved to Hamburger SV on January 5, 2007 . With the bottom of the table at that time, he made it to 7th place in the table at the end of the season and thus qualified for the UI Cup 2007/08.
At the end of the 2007/08 season, Frank Rost received the white vest football award for most clean sheets. Rost is the first goalkeeper to receive this award. This award was presented for the first time by the television broadcaster Deutsches Sportfernsehen at the end of the 2007/08 season.
On October 10, 2008, Rost extended his contract with Hamburger SV for a further year until June 30, 2010. He was given the option to take up an activity in the club environment after the end of his sporting career. Rost reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Europa League with HSV in 2009 and 2010 . In the winter break of 2009/10, Rost extended his contract as a licensed player for a further year until June 30, 2011. His contract, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended. Both parties agreed on this by mutual agreement.
In the summer break of 2011, the US first division club New York Red Bulls Rost signed. Rost made his debut in the Eastern Conference on July 17, 2011 (5th matchday) in a 0-0 draw in the away game at CD Chivas USA . Since the club could not agree on a contract extension with Rost in January 2012, he ended his football career the following month.
Selection bets
With the U-16 national team of the GDR he took part in two final tournaments in 1989. With the 2nd place in the U-16 European Championship, the East German selection also qualified for the World Cup in this age group . Against hosts Scotland was the last stop for the representation of the DFV in the early summer in the quarter-finals after a 0-1 defeat.
For the senior national team , Frank Rost played four international matches , the first time on March 27, 2002 in Rostock in a 4-2 victory over the United States , the last time on June 11, 2003 in Tórshavn in a 2-0 victory over Faroe Islands .
Further career
Rost, who has an A-trainer license , was part of the coaching team of the Hamburger SV women's soccer team from September 2012 . He carried out this activity on a voluntary basis. On April 11, 2013 he announced that he would give up his voluntary coaching job at HSV on June 30, 2013.
On June 19, 2013, Rost was appointed the new managing director of the HSV Hamburg handball club . On August 13, 2013, he was released from the club again before the start of the 2013/14 season. From 2014, he mainly devoted himself to horse breeding, which he runs on his farm in Rotenburg (Wümme) .
Trivia
Alongside Jens Lehmann and Marwin Hitz, Frank Rost is the only goalkeeper to date to have scored a goal out of the game in a Bundesliga game. In the match between Werder Bremen and FC Hansa Rostock on March 31, 2002, in the 90th minute, he scored the 3: 3 goal for Bremen, who won the game 4: 3. In addition, he is the only goalkeeper to date who has scored five hits on the goal wall of the ZDF sports program at the current sports studio .
With 87 games, Rost is currently the player with the second most appearances in the UEFA Cup and its successor in the Europa League. Only Giuseppe Bergomi (96) has more appearances in this competition, which initially started as a trade fair city cup in the 1950s .
