1989 European Under-16 Football Championship

The 7th U-16 European Football Championship was held in Denmark from May 4-14, 1989 . The winner was Portugal by a 4: 1 victory over the GDR . The Federal Republic could not qualify.

On May 6, 1989, the Soviet Union gave up points in the group stage for the first time, and the team had won every group game since Hungary in 1985.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners reached the semifinals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the semi-final losers played for third place.

The U-16 national team of Portugal thus became the European U16 / U17 junior soccer champion for the first time.
