The third U-23 European football championship , also called III. The European Youth Team Championship , took place from 1974 to 1976. Selected teams of players under the age of 23 from 23 associations took part in it. The USSR won the European title after two final games against defending champions Hungary .
The teams from the GDR and Austria were eliminated in the group stage. The Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland did not take part in the competition. For the first time, however, Luxembourg and two British teams were involved.
It was the last edition of the tournament for this age group; the European Championship of the U-23 teams was replaced by that of the U-21 teams.
The 23 registered teams were divided into seven groups of three and one group of two, which determined a group winner in the two-legged matches "everyone against everyone". The first in the group reached the quarter-finals; From this round onwards, the participants of the next round were played out in a knockout system . The away goal rule and the penalty shoot-out were used to determine the winner in the event of a tie in points and goals .
