The 14th U-16 European Football Championship was held from April 29 to May 11, 1996 in the Austrian federal states of Lower Austria and Vienna . It was the first UEFA tournament in Austria. Defending champions Portugal successfully defended their title with a 1-0 win over France , something that no team had before. Germany failed in the quarter-finals to Israel .

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the quarter-finals. From there on, the knockout system continued.
