The 18th U-16 European Football Championship was held in Israel from May 1 to 14, 2000 . It was the first UEFA tournament in Israel. The winner was Portugal by a 2: 1 victory after golden goal over the Czech Republic . Germany was eliminated in the quarter-finals on penalties against the eventual tournament winner. Defending champions Spain were also eliminated in the quarter-finals.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the quarter-finals. From there on, the knockout system continued.
