The 15th European Under-21 Football Championship was won by Italy . It was the fourth win for the Italians. Defending champion Spain took third place. Germany failed in the qualification. The finals, for which eight teams have qualified for the first time, took place in Slovakia from May 27th to June 4th, 2000 .
All teams entered were divided into nine groups. The group winners and the seven runners-up with the best points reached the round of 16. There the eight participants in the final round were determined in the first and second leg. The four semi-finalists also qualified as European participants for the 2000 Olympic football tournament in Sydney.
