Christian Abbiati (born July 8, 1977 in Abbiategrasso , Province of Milan , Italy ) is a former Italian football goalkeeper .
Career
Christian Abbiati began his professional career in 1996 at AC Monza Brianza and moved to AC Milan in 1998 , where he was able to assert himself against Jens Lehmann in internal competition . From January 1999 to summer 2002 Abbiati was a regular goalkeeper at Milan and was also appointed to the squad of the Italian national team for the 2000 European Championship by national coach and goalkeeping legend Dino Zoff . Here he was the third goalkeeper and was just as rarely used as at the 2002 World Cup and was overshadowed by Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Toldo .
At AC Milan, the Brazilian goalkeeper Dida overtook him from the 2002/03 season . Until 2005 Abbiati was only a substitute goalkeeper. When Juventus Turin's goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon suffered a serious shoulder injury in a friendly against Milan in the summer of 2005 and had to take a break for several months, the Rossoneri Abbiati loaned out to Juve for the 2005/06 season . There he showed outstanding performance and even recommended himself again for the national team. After Buffon's recovery, however, Christian Abbiati was demoted to substitute goalkeeper again, but at the end of the season some Serie A clubs were interested in his commitment, including Juventus. In the summer of 2006 Christian Abbiati was loaned to FC Turin , where he was a regular goalkeeper. He spent the 2007/08 season on loan at the Spanish club Atlético Madrid . For the 2008/09 season Abbiati returned to AC Milan, where he was able to prevail as a goalkeeper against Zeljko Kalac and Dida. After several years as the first goalkeeper, he moved into the second row behind the new regular goalkeeper Diego Lopez (previously Real Madrid ) in the 2014/15 season . In the 2015/16 season he was third in the goalkeeping ranking. He ended his career with this season.
