history

In the early Middle Ages , a place arose on the site of today's Abbiategrasso, which developed from the Abianus estate located on the edge of the Valle Grassa and was named after it. It was a royal palace until the 11th century and then a fortress of the Milanese near the Ticino. In the past, cattle and rice were farmed in the area . Abbiategrasso was conquered by Emperor Friedrich I in 1167 and by Friedrich II in 1245 . Matteo I. Visconti defeated the Guelphs here on September 24, 1313 . In 1419 Filippo Maria Visconti found refuge in Abbiategrasso. In 1524 a French garrison surrendered here to Giovanni de 'Medici ; under the command of Admiral Bonnivet and the Chevalier de Bayard , the main French army was on the retreat of Charles III. de Bourbon-Montpensier and the Marchese of Pescara near the village of Rebecco, 5 km north-west. The Abbiategrasso district existed from 1859 to 1927 .
