history
Magenta was probably a settlement of the Insubres tribe , which was founded in the 5th century BC. In 222 the area was conquered by the Romans. The place name Magenta is derived from the name of the Roman fortress castrum Maxentiae . After the fall of the Western Roman Empire , the place fell under the control of the Lombards .
Magenta was destroyed twice in the Middle Ages, once in 1162 by Frederick I and in 1356 by troops who fought against the Visconti . Legend has it that this is where Henry VII was stopped by a snow storm while he was marching on Milan. In 1398 Gian Galeazzo Visconti handed over the area of the place to the Carthusian monastery of Pavia ( Certosa di Pavia ). On June 4, 1859, a major battle in the Sardinian War took place in the area of Magenta . The name of the color magenta is said to be related to this battle, as the ground was soaked with so much blood that it turned a dark purple color.
