Pero (Milanese dialect Per ) is an Italian municipality in Lombardy and belongs to the metropolis of Milan .

Geographical location

Pero lies between the north-west of Milan, 9 kilometers away, and Rho , along the Sempione state road and crossed by the Olona River.

The community is in the Frazioni Cerchiate and Cerchiarello divided .

Origin of name

The name Pero comes from the medieval place name Cassina del Pero . As early as the tenth century, there was a farm in the town, whose main production was probably fruit, especially pears. ( pero it. = pear tree )

Another hypothesis derives the name from the geographical location. In ancient times, it was the only place from which one came from Milan to the ancient Via Serviana Augusto (today Sempione), or from there to Milan. ( per it. = to )

On December 23, 1894, the municipality was renamed from Cassina del Pero to Pero.

history

Pero is mentioned for the first time in a parchment dated February 12, 962. A vineyard in Cassina del Pero is mentioned here. Little infrastructure developed over the course of the tenth century.

From the 18th to the 20th centuries, the Pero area was repeatedly flooded by the Olona River.

On May 13, 1928, the merger with the municipality of Cerchiate was registered.

The many waterways, the location along the Sempione and the remarkable proximity to Milan favored the development of Pero as an industrial location. The conversion of the municipal area to an industrial location took place in the first half of the 20th century, but it was accelerated by the construction of a refinery in the post-war period .

traffic

Pero is connected to Milan and Rho by the M1 metro line (also known as the "red line").

There is also a connection to many waterways that lead to the Mediterranean Sea and the state road from Sempione.

Demographics

Pero has 4,279 private households . Between 1991 and 2001 the population fell from 10,667 to 10,373. This corresponds to a percentage decrease of 2.8%.
