Legnano (Eng .: Ligni ) is a city in northern Italy , northwest of Milan on the Olona , with 60,336 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The town has a church designed by Bramante with an altarpiece by Bernardino Luini . The mechanical engineering industry is an important employer. The bicycle and racing bike manufacturer of the same name was based here from 1902 until it was sold in 1987.

In the battle of Legnano on May 29, 1176, the army of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa was defeated by the Milanese troops. Giuseppe Verdi processed the theme in his opera La battaglia di Legnano , which premiered in 1849.

Legnano is located on the Olona River in Lombardy . Milan is about 25 kilometers southeast of the city. Other larger cities in the vicinity of Legnano are Busto Arsizio (approx. 5 kilometers northwest), Como (approx 25 kilometers north-northeast) and Monza (approx. 30 kilometers east).

There are regular train connections to Milan and Varese from Legnano station .
