Citizenship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Citizenship (mostly abbreviated as " Stabü " by the students ) was a subject in the GDR that was taught in the 9th and 10th grade and from 1969 on from the 7th to the 10th grade at the polytechnic high schools (POS) up to the 12th grade . Class was taught at the extended secondary schools (EOS) as well as during vocational training .

Content and aim of the lesson

The contents included an introduction to Marxist philosophy , the political economy of capitalism and socialism, and scientific socialism . The subject was part of the “ uniform socialist education system of the GDR ” and focused on the development of the “class point of view” of the students. The lessons were closely linked to the political youth organizations Pioniere and FDJ, which were integrated into the schools . The transfer of knowledge in this subject focused on the “ collective ”. “The step takes place from I to we” was a slogan in the GDR.

The civic education classes should give the students a "solid class consciousness " and the "commitment to the workers 'and peasants' state " and educate them to become "conscious citizens " of the GDR. In addition, the students were given knowledge about the structure of the state, the "leading role of the SED " which has been enshrined in the constitution since 1968 , the rights and obligations of GDR citizens and the ideology of Marxism-Leninism . It was of great importance that the socialist system was compared to the capitalist system as superior. The victory of socialism / communism over capitalism was presented as lawful. The mediation of the "unbreakable friendship" of the GDR with the Soviet Union and the portrayal of the "ruling classes " in the USA and the Federal Republic of Germany as " class enemies " were considered particularly important .
