Sesto San Giovanni is a city with 81,841 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Lombardy in Italy and part of the metropolitan city of Milan . It is located directly north of Milan and is connected to this major city by the M1 underground line.
history
A small town until the 19th century, Sesto San Giovanni grew quite rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Several industrial companies settled here, including Falck , Campari , Magneti Marelli and Breda . During this time, the population rose from 5,000 in 1880 to 14,000 in 1911. After the Second World War , many immigrants from southern Italy settled here. The city had its highest population to date in 1981 with 95,000 inhabitants.

In the 1990s Sesto San Giovanni suffered an economic crisis and many of the long-established companies closed their branches in the city.
On December 23, 2016, the Berlin assassin , Anis Amri , was shot dead during a police check in Sesto San Giovanni.
Town twinning
- Official town twinning has existed since 1961 with the French city of Saint-Denis in the Seine-Saint-Denis department and since 1966 with the Czech city of Zlín in Moravia .
- In 1999 Sesto concluded friendship agreements with Langenstein in Upper Austria and with the Polish Goradze in Upper Silesia .
