The Seine-Saint-Denis department [ sɛnsɛdni ] is the French department with the atomic number 93. It is in the Region Ile-de-France in the Paris region and mainly includes the suburbs in the north and northeast of the capital. The seat of the prefecture is Bobigny , the sub-prefectures are Le Raincy and Saint Denis .

geography

The department is bordered by Paris to the southwest, the Hauts-de-Seine department to the west, the Val-d'Oise department to the north, the Seine-et-Marne department to the east and the Val-de- department to the south. Marne .

Together with the departments of Hauts-de-Seine and Val-de-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis forms a ring around the city of Paris, known as the petite couronne ("little crown"). The three departments form the so-called banlieue , i.e. the populous suburbs of Paris, many of which, especially in the north and east, are known for their social problems.

history

Départemental division of Île-de-France before and after 1968

The department was created in 1968 when the Seine and Seine-et-Oise departments were divided into smaller departments. The serial number 93 therefore differs from the alphabetical order , the number was taken over by the former Constantine department (now Algeria ).

A world exhibition planned in the department for 2004 was canceled for financial reasons.

In October / November 2005, the department hit the headlines due to escalating riots that lasted for days, mainly among young people. The riots began in the suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois .

The residents often only briefly call their department le neuf-trois ("the nine-three", based on the number) because the actual name and the number ninety-three ( French quatre-vingt-treize ) are awkward to speak.

Population structure

The department makes up a significant part of the population of the Paris metropolitan area, and the population density is very high. The population is also, on average, very young and the proportion of immigrants is one of the highest in France.
