The Charente [ ʃaʀãt ] is the French department of 16 with the ordinal number It is the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in the west of the country and after the river Charente named.

geography

The Charente department borders the Deux-Sèvres and Vienne departments in the north, the Haute-Vienne department in the east, the Dordogne department in the southeast and the Charente-Maritime department in the west .

The most important river is the eponymous Charente , which reaches the department from the north, turns west in the centrally located capital Angoulême and leaves the department at Cognac . The extreme northeast of the department is drained by the Vienne , the south by the Dronne , which partly forms the border with the Dordogne department.

history

The Charente department was created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It largely corresponds to the old province of Angoumois .

From 1960 to 2015 it belonged to the Poitou-Charentes region , which in 2016 became part of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.

Evidence of the Stone Age settlement can be found in the necropolis of Boixe and in the necropolis of Édon .
