Confolens (pronounced [kɔfɔlɑ], Occitan Confolent ) is a French municipality with 2,670 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it is the administrative seat of the Arrondissement of Confolens .

geography

Confolens is located at the confluence of the Vienne and Goire - hence the name (from Latin confluens ) - 60 to 70 kilometers away from Limoges , Angoulême and Poitiers . The city is the center of the Charente limousine on the border between Langue d'oïl and Langue d'oc .

Neighboring communities are Lessac in the north-west, Brillac in the north, Esse in the east, Saint-Maurice-des-Lions in the south, Ansac-sur-Vienne in the south-west and Hiesse in the west.

history

Confolens was first mentioned in the 11th century. It belonged to the Lords of Chabanais , but - with the river as a border - was divided between two dioceses. The city walls were built in the 12th century. The barony of Confolens was elevated to the county of Confolens in 1604 .

The municipality of Saint-Germain-de-Confolens was incorporated into Confolens on January 1, 2016.

On a disused railway line, there are now rail trolley trips on the Confolens - Manot - Roumazières-Loubert line; since 2015 in summer (July and August), individual tourist train journeys again.
