The decline in population since the late 19th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .

economy

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; most people lived on a self-sufficient basis ; In the village itself, various craft and service professions developed . In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, viticulture was promoted, but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century - was almost stopped. Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ).

history

The region was already settled in the Neolithic ; the remains of the foundations of a country estate ( villa rustica ) date from Gallo-Roman times . Small Carolingian finds were made near the church . The place name Leigniaco has been handed down from the Middle Ages ; there was a priory here.

Attractions

  • The unadorned parish church of Notre-Dame , surmounted by a simple bell gable ( clocher mur ), stands on the site of a medieval priory church , which in turn may be related to a coming of the Knights Templar , which was dissolved in 1307-12 .
  • The Hosanna cross on a multi-tiered round base in the cemetery bears the year 1654. It probably replaced an older, significantly higher funeral lamp and was recognized in 1973 as a monument historique .
  • There are numerous unlabelled and undated sarcophagus plates in the town's cemetery.
  • The rarely used Protestant temple comes from the first half of the 19th century. Above the unadorned portal a table with the Bible commandment Tu ne feras pas d'image taillée ( "You shall not make any graven image ..." ( Ex 20.4  EU )).
  • The Logis de la Grange comes mostly from the 30s of the 19th century; however, it contains older parts from the 17th century (e.g. the pigeon house ). It has been on the inventory of the Monuments historiques since 1986 .
