The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is essentially due to the consequences of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; Most of the people lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient ; cattle breeding was also practiced. Craftsmen and small traders also settled in the village. In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, viticulture was promoted, but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - it is no longer important today. Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
Both were obtained from the in the municipality New Stone Age and from the La Tène period and Romans discovered traces and ceramic residues. In ancient times, the region belonged to the settlement area of the Celtic pictons , who were subjugated by Caesar during the Gallic War . A castle (château) is mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the 12th century .
Attractions
- The Saint-Barthélemy church was built in the 12th century from precisely hewn stones, which indicates a former priory church ; only the crossing tower consists largely of little hewn rubble stones . The semicircular apse is divided by half-column templates ; above it is a console frieze with simple heads and figures. The roofs are made of stone shingles (lauzes) . The originally rectangular gable of the facade was removed in the 19th century in favor of a triangular one. The portal of the rather simple facade is stepped down several times; A round arch frieze runs on consoles below the gable . The nave is barrel vaulted . The church building was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1913 . The altar of the church, made of wood around 1800, including the tabernacle was added to the inventory of the Monuments historiques in 2004 .
- The Château de Raix only a few sections. With the exception of a round stair tower , these date mainly from the 16th to 18th centuries.
