Fontenille is a place and a community with 322 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in western France Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The community consists of several hamlets (hameaux) and individual farmsteads (fermes) .
Location and climate
The place Fontenille is located at an altitude of about 85 m in the north of the department about 1 km north of the Charente river in the old cultural landscape of the Angoumois , part of the Charente landscape . The city of Angoulême is about 36 km (driving distance) south, Poitiers is a good 83 km north. The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 760 mm / year) falls over the year.

The continuous decline in population since the end of the 19th century is essentially due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; most people lived on a self-sufficient basis . In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, viticulture was promoted, but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - was almost stopped. Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
The presence of humans in today's area of the municipality is attested by several Neolithic grave structures ( dolmen ). During the time of Roman rule over Gaul , a Roman road ran through the municipality.
At the hamlet of Châteaurenaud in the south of the municipality there was once a fortress ( motte ). For the High Middle Ages, the time of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and the Wars of Religion (1562-1598), the sources are missing, but the gentlemen of seem Châteaurenaud the Protestantism connected to have.
